Friday, 9 February 2007, shpilk @ Daily Kos misses CO2 data from US facilities: (well, me too :)
Oh, I found this really cool interactive web page
which gives the European CO2 levels. Shame it doesn’t have the US or the rest of the world plotted for comparison on that map.

From the Full o’ surprises category…
OGC recently re-highlighted the aforementioned here, [http://ExploreOurPla.net ] website which in addition to being highly innovative and drawing upon emerging technologies is couched in a central theme of global change and exploring interfaces for realizing that change… of particular interest is the author’s work with timelines… http://exploreourpla.net/tropical-storms/timeline/ or you may just want to jump in to his Google Maps API, combined with Web Map Services with GeoRSS feeds stacked on top. geoLink

August 10th, 2006, Digital Geography tested his blog RSS feed with the geoFeedExplorer and examines classroom compatibility
With the geo-desktop projected onto a whiteboard, a teacher can identify geotagged audio/video podcasts and news feeds, switch between different map and satellite views including near real-time MODIS data from the Terra and Aqua satellites, plot weather, storms and earthquake data and map sounds from the freesound project.
There are a number of other other valuable layers, for example daylight, population density and settlement night lights. Of course, much of this information is widely available, and in some respects other applications like the excellent Earth Browser are still to be preferred.
Explore Our Pla.net is however web-based, and therefore available from any PC.

On the other hand, I sense that if a crusade were generated to make the killer app and a steady stream of useful, informative visualizations and put into an organized location (see: exploreourpla.net) with some community backing, then youd get a lot of people joining up to participate in the conversation about how to make it happen.
The Open Source GIS world is energized and has produced some really great developments.

ExploreOurPla.net - http://exploreourpla.net/ Integrates information from a variety of sources, focussing on environmental themes, and mashes them together for good effect. It tries to be smart about recognising where you are coming from by looking up your computer’s ip address, but get’s dreadfully wrong for our neck of the woods.
But hey, Mountain View US is close in name anway, and pretty darn pretty to boot: http://tinyurl.com/fbq67 (tip: use mouse scroll wheel to zoom in/out).

GeoRSS Fun
Adena Schutzberg’s “Fun with GeoRSS,” a primer on the emerging standard, prompted a number of users to pipe up. Some offered names and links to other software and feeds available that support GeoRSS.* Torsten Becker offers ExploreOurpla.net.
* Jason Birch noted Microsoft support for GeoRSS.Carl Reed of OGC (to whom I consult) offers some insight into the relationship between OGC and the GeoRSS community. “Yes, there has been a very open and honest discussion about copyright but that issue is being resolved.”
