Compared to winters since 1864 this winter ist still warmest in Switzerland. Basel reports a mean temperature of 5°C over last record from 1916 - diference of 0°C. Zurich had only 2 Days with snow (12cm in total).

Despite latest 2 cold and snowy winters the trend is clear: since 1970 the row of unusually warm winters continues and matches results of global climate models.

Satellite pictureThe Black Sea forms an enclosed basin, located between south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor. In this satellite picture, captured by Daily Terra , 2007-02-24, cold wind from North-East condensates water vapour in warmer air over the sea and forms clouds.

Though Kyrill was not an extrem storm its footprint is impressive. The storm struck Europe with hurricane-force winds over the course of two days, causing significant flight, rail, ferry and power disruptions, flooding, and building damage over a large part of Europe including the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and Germany. Satellite pictureToday Bushfire swept through transmission lines near Benalla, caused a massive blackouts in Victoria and affected 200,000. Temperature was at 39°C and network came under demand by cooling devices. Seen by Daily Terra, 2007-01-15.

Significant Climate Anomalies and Events in 2006

Though presenting warmest year on record for US most surprising sentence in the 2006 report from National Climatic Data Center is this one:

A contributing factor to the unusually warm temperatures throughout 2006 also is the long-term warming trend,
which has been linked to increases in greenhouse gases.

It looks like climate is changing for US in both senses.

Satellite pictureLast december and this January appears unusually mild to many people of the northern hemisphere. There are not only reports of higher temperatures, trees and flowers started to bloom in winter, ice bears dropped hibernation and migratory birds decided to stay home in their summer habitat.

NASA’s Earth Observatory used data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite and compared December surface temperature with average December temperatures from 2000-2005. Picture above shows hotter regions in red, some places have been up to 10 degrees Celsius warmer than in the recent past.

Nature prepares for Global Warming, when do mankind adapt?

Nice story written by Patrick Barkham, published in the Guardian 9th, January:

Hedgehogs shun hibernation to gambol amongst blooming daffodils. Cherry trees blossom and red admiral butterflies soar in the balmy breeze. From sheep to parrots, creatures pop out unseasonal sprogs. January is the new March, and not just in Britain: as Arctic ice retreats, ice rinks are closed across the pond; New Yorkers bask in 22C heat. …

Australian annual mean temperature anomalies
(compared to the 1961-90 average) since 1910 to present

Data collected by the Bureau of Meteorology indicate that Australia’s annual mean temperature for 2006 was 0.47°C above the standard 1961-1990 average, making it the eleventh warmest year since comparable temperature observations became available in 1910. (more…)

Satellite pictureToday tropical cyclone Clovis struck Madagascar. Clovis brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 120 km/h. Wind gusts in the area have been considerably higher. Captured by Daily Terra, 2007-01-02.
